The Quintessential Kenyan Cocktail - DAWA

The Dawa is one of our favourite cocktails and no trip to Kenya is complete without one. Originally inspired by the Brazilian caipirinha, it is the perfect drink to get you in the mood for the party season.

We both sat and had a memorable Dawa together on the beach in Mombasa on our first sourcing trip, a rare moment of calm in a hectic schedule. Something we hope to do again soon.

Here's our take on the Dawa. We hope you love it as much as we do!

1 Serving

YOU WILL NEED:

  • 1 lime cut into small chunks

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • Half to 1 tablespoon of honey (depending on your sweetness preference)

  • 60ml vodka

  • Ice cubes

HOW TO MAKE:

  1. Put the lime chunks, sugar and honey into a short tumbler glass

  2. Muddle together to release the lime juice and so the sugar and honey is all nicely combined (be careful not to over muddle the lime otherwise it will extract the bitterness from the peel)

  3. Add enough ice cubes to fill the glass

  4. Pour the vodka over the ice

  5. Stir and enjoy

Fun fact: Dawa is Swahili for 'medicine' and this famous cocktail is said to cure whatever ails you!

For a mocktail version - omit the vodka and replace with soda water or apple juice.
